DP83869HM: ESD protection for DP83869 Device

Hi,

We are using DP83869 to converting RGMII to Optical Interface in which we are connecting the SOP/SON, SIP/SON with the optical interface module. What is the recommended ESD protection device to be used on on these lanes.

Hi Sudarshan,

We have 2.5KV HBM internal ESD protection on optical pins. If that is sufficient for your system then you may not need any extra ESD protection. Let me know.

Hi Vikram,

Below are the requirements on the Optical Port connectivity on our board

ESD, IEC 61000-4-2, Level 4 of protection is required.

Is DP83869 device capable to handle this OR should we add an additional device for ESD protection

Hi Sudarshan,

We meet ESD, IEC 61000-4-2, Level 4 of protection only on the copper side but not for the fiber side. I may not be able recommend the exact part number of ESD device but if you can share the datasheet of the selected part, I can get it reviewed from the team here.

Planning to use SP3051 from little Fuse on SON/SOP, SIN/SIP lines. Please find attached the datasheet of the device

Hi Sudarshan,

ESD device looks ok to me as it has low enought load cap. I am checking with team if there is any known issue with ESD device and will get back in a few days.

Hi Sudarshan,

We dont have any known issue with the selected ESD so you may go ahead with this. But there is a general question from the team that as phy will be connected to optical transceiver on your system and not the cable directly then do you really need IEC ESD rating for this terminal?

Hi Vikram,

Sorry for the delay in the reply.

Only concern was when we plug in the optical module into the case which will be getting connected to the Phy Transciever. Just to avoid any ESD issues to the Phy device(DP83869) we wanted to provide the protection

As you have suggested that the ESD protection device we have choosen is fine, i will be closing this thread.
