TPS65987D: 10G-EXPANSION-EVM replacement

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: 10G-EXPANSION-EVM, TPS65987

Hello Team,

I am working with a customer who is evaluating TPS65987 and have ordered an EVM. As part of the evaluation we want to examine the superspeed lines which would normally be done using 10G-EXPANSION-EVM. I noticed from another post that this EVM is no longer available. If we are able to source one (through digikey, mouser etc) would you still recommend using it? The post also recommended this could be done using a PD analyzer, do we have a particular option that we would recommend using for the evaluation?

Thanks,

Garret

  • Hi Garret,

Yes we took down the 10G-EXPANSION-EVM because that type of demonstration is much more susceptible to outside variables that just the TPS65987EVM on its own. Adding and evaluating the 10G-EXPANSION-EVM no longer relies on just the PD controller, but also evaluates the devices and cables connected on both sides of the EVM to see if they can handle the signal conditioning. The PD controller can do its part by negotiating an alternate mode via the PD messaging and then update the MUX based on this information, but if customer uses a long cable that does not have adequate signal conditioning built in, then the display will not come on. This will look like it is our devices fault for the failure, when it is actually something out of our control. This is why we decided to remove the 10G-EXPANSION-EVM from the web so that we can focus on providing support and walking our customers through issues specifically related to our device.

For your question, you can order a 10G-EXPANSION-EVM online, but keep in mind that using this EVM evaluates more than just the PD controller.

As far as the PD analyzer, the one that I typically recommend is the Total Phase PD Analyzer. You get the most bang for your buck and is pretty straight forward to use
