TUSB546-DCI: TUSB546 & TUSB564 DisplayPort splitter box. Possible?

Part Number: TUSB546-DCI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB564, TPS65981, HD3SS460

Hi,

We have already designed a source&sink device using TUSB546 and TUSB564. Used a long cable between them.

We'd like to use a longer usb-c cable (to reach more) and also to split displayport signal (like a duplicated screen).

1) Is it possible to realize such a consept design below? Any recommendation and correction?

2) There is no MCU in splitter box. I think TUSB546/564 and TPS65981 can work stand-alone without any MCU in GPIO mode? Right? If couldn't, maybe we can use i2c bus on USB3.0 HUB from source box MCU.

Thanks. Regards.

Ali

  • Hi Ali,

This kind of system is indeed possible using combinations of TUSB546/564. I recommend having the USB-C splitter box having an external supply. You should be able to use the TPS65981 GPIOs to control TUSB546 however GPIO mode may limit some flexibility. I2C should also be kept on the board for faster debug.

I do not see an issue with this proposal. You can use the TI Type-C Mini-Dock as a starting point for your design with the HD3SS460 being replaced by the TUSB564.

You can also order the Mini-Dock and the TUSB546 EVM to concept proof your design.

    Thanks
