TPD6S300: D+ and D- OVP function for USB typeC

Part Number: TPD6S300
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD8S300A, , , STRIKE

Hi Team,

My customer would like to add OVP solution on D+ and D- for USB TypeC. I think TPD6S300 also can meet customer requirement. But it look like only can use SBU1/2 path because CC1/2 path with incorporates dead battery resistors. Is it correct?

Best regards,

Hardy

  • Hi Hardy,

Please check out the TPD8S300A and let me know your thoughts. This part provides pins for D+/D- and could be a good fit here.

    Thanks,

    Emma

  • Hi Emma,

TPD8S300A and TPD6S300 just increase ESD protection channel. I need check "OVP" solution for D+ and D- is ok or not because I see function block example on datasheet.

Is it okay if customer use TPD6S300 for D+ and D- OVP function ?

    Best regard,

    Hardy

  • Hi Hardy,

Yes you are correct, the TPD6S300 can be used in this manner for D+/D- protection. I thought you were seeking a solution with more than 2 D+/D- channels, so thank you for clarifying!

You can use the TPD6S300's 4-channels of Short-to-VBUS Overvoltage Protection for the CC1, CC2, SBU1, and SBU2 pins or the CC1, CC2, DP, and DM pins. If you want the OVP for DP and DM, do not connect the SBU pins from the type-c connector and instead connect the D+ and D- pins.

Also, I would recommend using the TPD6S300A, as it is pin to pin compatible and has improved dead battery performance and keeps the port connected during an ESD strike.

    Thanks,

    Emma
