TCAN330: Regarding functional safety

Part Number: TCAN330
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD257, TCAN337

Hi,

I am currently using  CAN transceiver "SN65HVD257" in my design for redundant multi topology CAN network.

   1. Can " TCAN337" be used as an alternate ? (difference in voltage requirements, pinout is not a problem).

   2. Also can this part no supports functional safety features or is there any way to acheieve product level functional safety certification.

Regards,

Srivatsan.R

  • Srivatsan,

    1. If you can supply VCC with 3.3V rather than 5V, yes the TCAN337 will work. Otherwise no, the TCAN337 transceiver is based on a 3.3V supply and biases the CAN bus accordingly. The SN65HVD257 is a a transceiver based on a 5V VCC supply and biases the CAN bus accordingly.

    2. At this point, no this device does not support functional safety, but it can contribute to an overall system ASIL rating.

    Regards,

  • Hi Eric,

       Thanks for the response.

"At this point, no this device does not support functional safety, but it can contribute to an overall system ASIL rating."

Do you mean that TI will provide support to achieve product level ASIL / SIL  rating using this transceiver ?

  • Srivatsan,

All TI can provide is documentation over the FIT, failure mode distribution, and Pin failure mode of the device to help assist in failure mechanism information. We can't directly support the ASIL rating process.
