illegal type-c device connection

Part Number: TPS65987D

Hi,

There's some illegal type-c (on-PD) device in market with Rd on CC pin but still provide 5V on VBUS.  Considered such device connected to a type-c port using TPS65987DDH configured as source only, what would happens to TPS65987DDH.  What kind of protection we can do?

THanks,

Antony

  • Hi Antony,

For the TPS65987D, you can refer to section 5.1 of the power path performance and protection document. Let me know if this helps answer your question

  • HI Adam,

Thanks for your comments.  IN this document, the example is a illegal PD adapter (power source) connected.  Does it mean if we detect any illegal type-c device (either power source or power sink), we would always keep all sink or source path (internal or external path) disabled?

Do you confirm we're able to detect the illegal type-c device as described in my original post?

    Thanks,

    Antony

  • Hi Antony,

In your original post, that is an illegal power source that is connected. It is presenting 5V on VBUS even though it is presenting an Rd.

So our protection features described in the app note I shared would trigger in such a scenario. We would not indicate that an illegal device has been connected, but we would respond to the fault event the illegal device would trigger, protecting the system.
