TPS65983B: TPS65983B power and protocol test issue on over 3A PDO under GRL PD equipment

Part Number: TPS65983B

Hi all,

My customer use TPS65983B in dock application. In the same GUI environment (except 20V 3A/3.25A) project and vendor definition file. PDO in 20V3A can pass protocol and power test, but 20V3.25A has failed items as below. Is there anything I have to set on project? Something about SOP' or...? Thanks for your kindly help. If you need .prj for review, please let me know. Thanks.

FW bin: tps65983b_v1.31.04.bin

Power:

PT_13_13_1_PROT_PROC_HR_TSTR  >> PD contract negotiation failed. Tester mode: Sink

PT_13_13_2_POW_SRC_LOAD_CP_ACC_PDO5_20V_3_25A  >> DUT failed to accept REQUEST message from Tester

PT_13_13_2_PROT_PROC_HR_TSTR

PT_13_13_5_POW_SRC_TRANS_CP_ACC_1_5  >> DUT failed to accept REQUEST message from Tester

Protocol: (GRL doesn't test below items in 20V3A DUT)

TDA.2.2.2.3 BMC-PROT-SEQ-CHKCAP-CP-ACC    >> DUT did not send DISCOVER-ID-INITIATER to cable

TDA.2.2.2.4 BMC-PROT-SEQ-CHKCAP-NOMRK-CP-ACC >> DUT did not send DISCOVER-ID-INITIATER to cable

  • Hi Gary,

Are you using internal (PP_HV) or external power path (PP_EXT) when testing 3.25A PD negotiation? note: internal power path is only capable of 3A.
Are you using an active or Emarked cable? note: only active cables have greater than 3A capibility
Yes, can you please send project file.

    Thanks
    Jeff
  • Hi Jeff,
I think my failure items on GRL test are all about active cable connection: my dock can't communicate with active cable (no sop' message) on GRL equipment. My customer use competitor's CC controller with same emark cable can pass the test. But, wen I use the same cable to connect with other NB, like Macbook and Yoga, I can see the sop' message with cable on log. Do you have idea why my dock can't communicate with GRL test on emark cable... Or I have to check that with GRL?

    Best regards,
    Gary
  • Hi Gary,

Only a DFP can communicate with the emark cable. A dock has a perferred data role of UFP and sinks data. Can you tell me more about the dock you are trying to use?

    Thanks

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,
Our dock is UFP/Power source. I think it have to communicate with emark cable...

    Gary
  • Hi Gary,

To clarify the issue, the TPS65983B is sending SOP' messages to the active cable however the active cable is not receiving these messages.

    FYI from PD spec:
1)Referring to page 72 of 'USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.0, Version 1.0a' => If there is no Contract or an Implicit Contract in place, "the Sink does not communicate with the Cable Plug, even if it is the DFP, and Discards any SOP’ Packets received".
    2) Referring to page 77: "The Sink does not generate SOP’ or SOP’’ Packets, is not required to detect SOP’ or SOP’’ Packets and does not recognize them".

In order to further look into your issue, can you send me a Lecroy PD log of the failing case?
Can you also include a Lecroy PD log of competitor PD controller passing case?

    Quick Debugging steps
    1) is the cable getting VCONN from host (Ra is attached)?
note: if you have two chips per cable -> only one is powered at a time.

    Thanks
  • TI_Competitor_forGRL.xlsxHi Jeff,

I can provide GRL's log for your reference. TI TW FAE think that might be GRL's PD spec. (2.0/3.0)  issue and discussing with GRL now. FYI.

    Best regards,

    Gary

  • Hi Gary,

Thanks for the FYI. The PD analyzers we use sometimes have discrepancies between 2.0/3.0 PD spec. I looked at your GRL log and can see the 'SOP1' message not being read by the active cable with 'NONE' message. I will look into your log further and I will let you know if I find anything.

    Thanks
  • Hi Gary,

Were you able to pass 20V 3.25A GRL test?

    Thanks

  • Hi Jeff,
No. We don't past 20V 3.25A GRL test until now, and GRL TW Lab doesn't response any comment to us so far. FYI and thanks.

    Gary
