TPS65982-EVM: Not able to connect using Aardvark

Part Number: TPS65982-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65981EVM, TPS65982, TPS65981

Hi All,

In the past (several weeks ago I was able to prgoram the TPS65982-EVM succesfully.

Currently this is unfortunately no longer possible.

I get the following respond from the utilities GUI:

Connection Results:

Successful Interface Open

Exception Encountered during Configure Test

Exception

error: no bytes read
device may be unpowered or I2C address may be incorrect

The device is powered and I am using the same I2C address as before but still I am not able to program the TPS65982-EVM

any suggestions on how to get this back working?

  • Hi Mitchel,

Welcome to E2E! Did you get a chance to read through and set up the Host Interface GUI?

On another note, we usually recommend using the FTDI board and the Applications Customization GUI instead of the Host interface GUI: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvuar8a/slvuar8a.pdf

  • Dear Aramis,

Yes like I mentioned in my previous post I was able to use the Aardvark with the TPS65982-EVM

and since a few weeks ago (I did not change any settings) (I am not sure if Microsoft did any update in the mean time).

The strange thing is it tells me it is a power issue but I checked the power supply and it is working.

I even tried a third TPS65982-EVM i have not used yet and same issue here as well.

I need some suggestions so I can check why I can no longer Read/write to the TP65982-EVM using the Aardvark.

  • Hi Mitchel,

Sorry to hear that. Could you possisbly get your hands on the TPS65981EVM? It's basically the same device with a different package, but it has a FTDI board that comes with it.
  • Dear Aramis,

With the Aardvark I also ordered a cable to connect to the TPS65982-EVM. Do I need to order additional cables with the TPS65981-EVM as well or is all needed cables included?

Does this mean there is something wrong with the Aardvark?

I have in total 8x TPS65982-EVM and with the addition of the TPS65981-EVM I will be able to program the firmware to these TPS65982-EVM and additional read the PD profiles like I am used to with the Aardvark?

  • Hi Mitchel,

The only cable you would need with the FTDI board is a Type-A to Micro-B cable (as well as a 19.5-20V Laptop power supply). We update the Customization Tool for the FTDI board frequently (most of our customers use this method to flash .bin images to our controllers) and the Aardvark utilities tool might need an update. With the FTDI board (it comes with the TPS65981 EVM board), you will be able to program the firmware on the TPS65982 EVM's, similar to the Aardvark. I hope this helps :-)

  • Hi Aramis,

It has been a while since our last conversation I ordered the TPS65981 EVM board. And finally started to resume the project I was working on. Unfortunately also with the TPS65981 EVM board I cannot program the firmware to any of the TPS65982 boards. The software states: Erasing (even after an hour nothing changed). So I have absolutely no idea why I cannotflash any of the TPS65982 boards anymore (which I was able to do in the past.

  • Hi Mitchel,

How are you connecting the FTDI board (from TPS65981) to the TPS65982? I was able to flash a template onto the TPS65982 using the TPS65981 FTDI breakout board. Make sure the TPS65982 board sits right on top of the FTDI BOard (Barrell Jack and micro-B facing the same way). Look below for a screenshot:

Also, when you flash the firmware make sure to choose "FTDI" instead of "Aardvark" in the "USB to SPI Adaptor" Field (screenshot below). I hope this helps :-)

  • Hi Mitchel,

Could you PLEASE select  This resolved my issue

Thank you so much for your question and choosing TI parts for your design :-)
