TPS65983: Is PD response time of TBT/USB mode adjustable?

Part Number: TPS65983

Dear TI members,

We have encountered a timing issue on native PCIe mode platform, and the root cause is the PD response time of TBT/USB mode. During our investigation, we found that If the response time is over 200ms, DUT can't functional on that platform. Could TI add this response time parameter for modification in TI configuration tool?

  • Hi Axel,

The response time for TBT/USB mode is not adjustable in the TPS65983. Which Intel reference design are you following? The TPS65983 should only be used with Intel reference designs.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

We indeed use the Intel reference design, it is followd AR SP NGFF REV2P5_FINAL in AR SP Device document.
Could you help to give some advise?
  • Hi Axel,

Can you confirm that you are using the latest software tool version?

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

Although it's not the latest now, we use the v3.10 (TI FW 445) when developing. But I have installed the v3.13 (the latest) and checked the settings, there no any time parameters in latest sw tool.
  • Hi Axel,

We have not heard timing issues with any others following the intel reference designs. Are you using the correct template in the configuration tool for the design you are following?

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

This issue happened in the native PCIe host which OS, BIOS and HW needs to supports this feature. Without native PCIe mode, everything works fine.

We used the TPS65983_fw4_Intel_BPD_EXT_v3_10.tpl for TI template and only modified the ID and billboard infomation. As our opinion, we all followed the Intel reference design and template config provided by TI.

One more questions, does below parameters could affect the PD response time of TBT/USB mode? (or the alternate mode timeout)
    A. USB Capable in Transmit Sink Capabilties page
    B. Data Capable as USB Device in UFP Discover Identity Response page
    C. Data Capable as USB Host in UFP Discover Identity Response page
  • Hi Axel,

None of the configurations should have an effect on the PD Response time of TBT/USB mode. The latest config tool should be 3.13 which contains the latest version of FW. I noticed you are using 3.10 from your previous post. Please download the latest config tool from the secure site to use the latest FW on your board.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Thanks for your comment and suggestion, neither HW nor TI settings could affect the response time.

Could you help me to confirm those description correct or not?
    1. As long as we follow the Intel reference design(AR SP NGFF REV2P5_FINAL), the PD Response time of TBT/USB mode should be a correct time period which SPEC may have defined it.
    2. As long as we use the default PD settings from any TI template, None of the configurations should affect the PD Response time of TBT/USB mode, even other settings which not in the GUI configuration tool.
  • Hi Axel,

Both of your above statements are correct.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

We notice that the latest TI FW is v6.31 is for TPS65983B, and v4.45 is the latest TI FW for TPS65983.
Our device uses TPS65983 and FW is v4.45, so we are already the newest.
Do you mean we need upgrade FW to v6.31?
Moreover, could the 983 use v6.31 FW that only for 983B? Is there any side effect?

Does the 983B have the parameter or register could adjust the response time of TBT/USB mode?

  • Hi Axel,

The 83 will only work with 83 FW. If you have a TPS65983 on your PCBs, you must use the latest 4.xx Firmware that you can find in the MySecure Site for the TPS65983.
983B also has no register for changing the response time of TBT/USB mode.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

For this issue, we found a special behavior on TI chip. Only the host w/ TPS65982 and TPS65988 have this response time issue, but TPS65983 doesn't. That means:

    Host + Device Result
    982 + 983 FAIL
    988 + 983 FAIL
    983 + 983 PASS

If the 983B is similar to 983 then the result of 983B should be the same.

According to the result, does TI chips have the compatibility issue between each model? Furthermore, does the new chips(983 and 983B) improve any response time or mode changing design?

Due to we have to clarify many things on TI, I am very grateful for your answer and quickly prompt.
  • Hi Axel,

can you confirm which FW version you are using on your 983? Are you using FW version 4.45 from the mysecuresite?
Also, can you provide more details on the failure you are seeing? What is failing?

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

Our device indeed used the 983 chip w/ 4.45 FW, and the configuration tool/FW downloaded by mysecuresite. Moreover, we followed Intel reference design and used the default TI PD template settings.

We have encountered a timing issue on native PCIe mode platform. When the PD response time of TBT/USB mode is more than 200ms, the device manager shows yellow bang to our thunderbolt device. This means the native PCIe mode platform can't emulation the PCI config correctly due to the delay PD response time for TBT mode. And we also observed that the platform w/ 982 and 988 had this issue, but 983 didn't.

Therefore, we want to know is there any compatibility issue on TI TPS65xxx chips or does the 983 chip optimize the response time?

  • Hi Axel,

Can you tell me which template you are using on your boards? I believe you should be using an Apex Creek template.
    Please confirm.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • If you mean the Thunderbolt NVM, it's Ash Creek BPD 1 port because our device is bus-powered.
If you mean the TI configuration tool, it's TPS65983_fw4_Intel_BPD_EXT_v3_10.tpl for external power.

We followed Intel reference design and used the default PD setting by the template except for USB billboard and ID information.
Again, we want to know is there any compatibility issue on TI TPS65xxx chips or does the 983 chip optimize the response time?
  • Hi Axel,

There is no compatibility issue with the TPS6598x chips and the 983. They have all been tested together. The 983 and 983B handle the PD and TBT response time in the same manner.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

I have questions about the TI configuration tool settings.

    1. Does 982 and 988 fully support the alternate mode?

    2. On Thunderbolt device, does the normal mode mean USB and alternate mode mean Thunderbolt which used the default PD setting on 983/983B chip?

    3. If Q2 is correct, what product type should I select in the below pictures, "Alternate Mode Adapter" or "Peripheral"?

    4. For one port thunderbolt bus-powered device, could I turn on both "Data Capable as USB Device" and "Data Capable as USB Host"?

Or I can only turn on "Data Capable as USB Device" due to the host may confuse if I turn on both.

  • Hi Axel,

    1. Yes, that is correct.
    2. Yes, that is correct.
    3. You would need to select Peripheral since you are following the BPD reference design.
    4. You could enable both"Data Capable as USB Device" and "Data Capable as USB Host" with no issues.

    Thank you,
    Eric
