TPS65983B: TPS65983B connection issue with Lenovo Yoda

Part Number: TPS65983B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65981EVM, TPS65981

Hi all,

My customer use TPS65983B to design a type-c dock with cable. There're different condition by using different FW with similar setting:

1. 982 base FW: It works good with Yoda in FW version 1.12.0 or later.

2. 983B base FW. I test FW 1.38.01 and 1.38.02. They have same result: sink side's soft reset command is responded by source in stead of by cable ( 983b is sop and sop' host) and the connection is really break...

Please help to check the pjt and give me suggestion what I should modify in my setting. Thanks.

Best regards,

Gary Teng

  • Hi Gary,

Thank you for using our devices for your project. Is this for a Thunderbolt device? Do you need PD3.0 or is PD2.0 ok for this application?

  • Hi Aramis,

It's a type-c project and just need to support PD2.0. FYI.

  • Hi Gary,

The TPS65983/B are only used for Thunderbolt 3 reference designs by Intel. If you're not building a thunderbolt system, then the TPS65983/B is NOT recommended. I would recommend the TPS65981EVM, which is customizable to fit most type of builds. I hope this helps.

  • Hi Aramis,
I'm sorry that customer need PD3.0 and it's Dell'l dock project which's almost in MP status. I can't change device in this moment... Or you means 983B can't be use in dock tether with fully- featured cable?

  • Hi Gary,

The TPS65983B is for Intel's Thunderbolt 3 ecosystem. If the customer were to build a Thunderbolt system, they would need to copy and paste the Intel reference design relevant to the Intel CPU they're using. If the customer is not building a Thunderbolt ecosystem, then the TPS65981 is the recommended device.

We currently do not offer a PD3.0 mass-market device, but the good news is that PD3.0 didn't change much from PD2.0. The Power Rules are identical (5V, 9V, 15V, 20V). What new features are needed from PD3.0 that PD2.0 does not offer?

  • Hi Aramis,

We test 983B v.1.31.04 FW and it works correctly. Please check the sop' response message.

Please help to check what's the different between those version of code for SOP' process. Thanks.

  • Hi Gary,

If this project is not for a Thunderbolt 3 application, then please do not use this device. This device should only be used for Thunderbolt applications. In order to design a thunderbolt application, the customer would need to copy and paste the Intel reference design according to the Intel chip they're using.

My understanding is this is NOT a thunderbolt design. Please use the TPS65981/2/6 family of devices.
