Type C to DP Dongle solution

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65981EVM, HD3SS460, TUSB1064

Hello

we want to build a Type C to DP Dongle.

This Dongle can support the Video stream goes  from Type C side to DP side,  and can also goes from DP side to Type C side.

That means, if we plug the end of Type C into PC's Type C output connector , then the end of DP Male connector will plug into Monitor's DP input connector.

If we plug the DP Male connector into PC's output connector,  then the end of  Type C will be plugged into Monitor's Type C input connector.

Is there total solutions for this kind of Dongle ??

Thanks

  • Hello Jesse

You can follow the reference design of the DP expansion EVM when used with the TPS65981EVM. You will want to use DP connector and not a mini-DP connector, as some mini-DP to DP cables are not bi-directional.

Here's also a good application note that talks about display port as a Type-C PD alternate mode.

  • Thanks for your reply.
I want to find a 4:6 bidirection MUX IC with 8.1Gbps bandwidth to replace HD3SS460 which just can support 5.4 Gbps DisplayPort 1.
I find TUSB1046A is just a DFP Switch IC.
  • Hello Jesse,

Unfortunately I do not know the MUX portfolio very well as I'm responsible only for our PD controllers. What I would recommend is to close this thread, and start a new one. However, in the box where it asks what TI part you are using, put down the HD3SS460. It will notify the group responsible for those parts, and they can give you a more informed answer than I can.

Just follow these reference designs,  use a DP connector instead of mini-DP, and you should be fine!

  • Hello Jesse,

The TUSB1046A is a 6:4 single-direction mux as well as a redriver. It is designed to be used in a DFP. You would have compliment it with a TUSB1064, which is the UFP version of this device, to enable bi-directional support.

We do not have a device that would be exactly like the HD3SS460 with 8.1Gbps support.

    Thanks,

    Andrew
