ISO1050: not pin-pin compatible with ISO1042

Part Number: ISO1050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1042,

Dear Sir/Madam,

While seeking ISO1050 drop-replace (or, even more, performance upgrade), ISO1042 comes to attention.  Unfortunately, ISO1042(SOIC-8) is not pin to pin compatible with ISO1050 (SOIC-8): Pin2/3 (Rxd/Txd) are “swapped” between these two devices (SOIC-8 package).

Could you please kindly get/share the rationale why TI designed the pin-out in this way (not pin to pin compatible) ?

Thanks a lot,

Steven
