ISO1541: signal isolation only

for some reasons I'm not able to implement a power isolation between master and slave in one of our application. So, I'm thinking about of signal isolation implementation only, like shown on the picture below.

I'm thinking that also only signal isolation is better than no isolation. Without any isolation, high current values (becasue of high power consumption of slave device) could affect on the I2C communication because of voltage drop over the ground lines. With signal isolation implemented, voltage drop should not have an effect on communication any more, because I2C isolator generates SDA/SCL signal with voltage level relative to the master ground level on one side and slave ground level on the other side.

    Thanks for reaching out and for your interest in ISO1541.

    Isolation in I2C is usually implemented to separate high voltage and low voltage circuits, protect a low voltage circuit from EMI and noise or to minimize the ground potential difference. All of these are achieved when both signal and power are isolated, isolating only the signal lines might not truly achieve isolation between the two systems.

    But in your case, I understand that you are trying to compensate for the voltage drop in the communication cable. Isolation can help to address this to some extent and you can use ISO1541 to meet your requirements.

    Please note that ISO1541 is our older generation I2C isolator, we now have the newer generation device ISO1641 that offers many performance improvements over ISO1541. Hence, I recommend you to use the ISO1641 in your application. Thanks.
