ISOW1044: CAN FD vs CAN classic

Part Number: ISOW1044
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1042, ISO1044

Hi team,

I just wanted to confirm with you all, if my customer was using ISO1042 (classic CAN) and is replacing that with CAN FD for ISOW1044, will there be any need for FW changes on the MCU at all? Are there any concerns or major differences between the two protocols?

They are mostly moving to it because of the integrated DC/DC, not for any special improved performance for CAN FD vs classic CAN.

Thanks,

Lauren

  • Hi Lauren,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Please note that both ISO1042 and ISOW1044 (or even ISO1044) support Classic CAN datarate of 1Mbps and both also support CAN FD upto 5Mbps, as stated in their respective datasheets. Hence, I do not expect there to be a need for making any changes to software between the two devices.

If customer was operating ISO1042 at classic datarate of 1Mbps and switching to ISOW1044 and still operating at 1Mbps, then I do not see any issues.
If customer was operating ISO1042 at FD datarate of upto 5Mbps and switching to ISOW1044 and still operating at FD datarate of upto 5Mbps, then I do not see any issues either.
If customer was operating ISO1042 at classic datarate of 1Mbps and switching to ISOW1044 and operating it at 5Mbps, then I am not sure if this requires any software changes.

I hope this answers your question, thanks.
