ISO1410: VCC2 application

Part Number: ISO1410
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PROFIBUS,

Hello,

I'm developing a project that will make use of the Isolated RS485 transceiver ISO1410, looking to its datasheet on the isolated Profibus side there is a connection to "VCC2" described as "Transceiver-side power supply". What is the purpose of this connection? Should I connect it to any internal power source (+5V for instance) or is meant to deal with an external power source available from the Profibus?

If so, in a Master application, who is responsible by feeding that power rail?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,

  • Hello,

Thank you for your question. You can think of the ISO1410 as having two sides separated by the isolation barrier. These two sides are isolated from each other and require separate grounds and power supplies. The power supplies are referred to as VCC1 for the left side (logic inputs) and VCC2 for the right side (transceiver outputs). The VCC2 pin should be connected to a different power supply than VCC1, which is sourced from the right side of the isolation barrier (does not cross the barrier). The power supply does not have to be made exclusively for VCC2 and can be shared with other devices on the right side of the isolation barrier. It is recommended that this power supply be between 3V and 5.5V.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

    Darrah
