How to Enable Sink/Source Mode without Terminal/Component Changes?

  • In the above circuit, the dotted box 2 in figure is a full bridge diode rectifier to connect COM1 and COM2 to AVCC and AVSS accordingly.  Assuming AVCC=24V, ISO1228 can be configured as mentioned below:

    1. If COM2 = 24V and COM1 = GND, ISO1228 gets configured to sink mode.
    2. If COM1 = 24V and COM2 = GND, ISO1228 gets configured to source mode.
    3. For LEDx Pins, back-to-back anti-parallel diodes will enable field side current indication for both sink and source mode. For sink mode, LED whose cathode is connected to ground will glow. Whereas for source mode, LED whose cathode is connected to LEDx pin will glow.
