ISO1640: CAN data transmission over ISO1640

Part Number: ISO1640
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1042, ISO7820LL

Tool/software:

I am trying to create a bi-directional CAN isolation circuit to remove much of the interference from my data. I came across the chip ISO1640 and I am wondering if the IC ISO1640 is able to process CAN signals.

If it isn't, would TI have any chips that can isolate CAN (or even raw bits) that I could utilize?

Thank you

  • Hello Dhruv,

thank you for reaching out. ISO1640 is designed as an I2C isolator. CANH and CANL are not 0-5V signals, therefore ISO1640 will not work with CAN signals. Currently the recommendation to isolate CAN signals are the CAN transceivers, such as ISO1042. If you need a CAN buffer this would be functionally equivalent to two ISO1042 with the logic sides (RXD and TXD) interconnected. Although that may not be practical.

Currently our only device families that act a bidirectional buffer are ISO1640 (I2C isolators) and ISO7820LL (isolated LVDS).

    Best,
    Andrew
