ISOUSB211: Design Inquiry

Part Number: ISOUSB211
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESD441

Hi Team,

I'm using the isolator ISOUSB211DPR  for my application. For ESD protection with IECIEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 ESD Protection – ±30-kV Contact Discharge – ±30-kV Air Gap Discharge,

Does there is a need of ESD ICs as isolators already isolating high voltages,

If needed please suggest a part with the above specifications.

Regards,
Abhishek

  • Hello Abhishek,

Thank you for reaching out. ESD transients and isolation transients can be different from each other. The isolation ratings are valid from side 1 to side 2 pins. This means that the isolator will help protect solution by stopping transients from crossing the isolation barrier. The isolated side of the board will be protected from ESD events to the connector or other components on the HV-side. However, ESD transients will still be present and need protectors for same side ESD events.

While using ISOUSB211 sensitive electronics needs less protection circuits and helps to reduce the number of protections needed. The app note How to use isolation to improve ESD, EFT and surge immunity in industrial system addresses this well.

  • Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the sharing the details.

In the link you shared clearly mentioned about the ESD transients with and without using isolation barriers. It also shows the option for using TVS diodes at the input pins of the isolators. Can you share the specific part numbers for ESD diodes that can be used for my application with IECIEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 ESD Protection – ±30-kV Contact Discharge – ±30-kV Air Gap Discharge.

It would be really helpful for me if you provide these details.

    Regards,

    Abhishek

  • Hello Abhishek,

ESD441 would be a good place to start. You can find more options at ESD protection diodes product selection | TI.com

Please create a new thread if you have any questions on ESD diode specifics.

    Best,
