ISO7421: Best UART-microcontroller interface

Part Number: ISO7421
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO7721, ISO7321C

Dear Sir or Madame,

We are developing a wearable product for biomedical purposes, which transfers data to and from the host through a UART interface, at 115200 bauds. In order to fulfill the corresponding international standards, we need to isolate our hardware from the host (PC or smartphone or tablet) using some kind of isolator. I think the ISO7421 is a good option. Do you recommend another better option, please?

Thank you very much in advance.

Best regards,

Fernando

  • Dear Fernando,

Thank you for using E2E Forum and I am happy to know that you are looking to TI isolator for your wearable product. ISO7421 is one of our older generation digital isolators, for your application I recommend you using one of our latest generation devices ISO7721. ISO7721 is a reinforced OOK based digital isolator that offers much higher performance compared to ISO7421 from both electrical/switching parameters and isolation specification point of view. At the same time it is also optimized to provide the most competitive price in the market.

Please do go through the device datasheet and do let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

  • Dear Koteshwar Rao,
Thank you very much for your useful answer. I see that the ISO7721 is pin-by-pin compatible with the ISO7421. I wonder whether the current consumption of the wearable system is too high for the proposed IC. Could you please give me a hand in this? My plan is to use the FT232 IC for the UART.
    Thanks!
  • Dear Fernando,

I understand your concern regarding current consumption of the isolator for your application. Since you are operating the isolator at 115200 bauds, I would recommend you to use ISO7321C to keep the power consumption low. ISO7321 uses similar architecture as ISO7421 but has better overall performance and is one of the latest devices with edge-based architecture.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, thank you.
