SN6505A: Use SN6501/SN6505 to convert 5V to 12V with 100mA Io

Hi team,

My customer is considering to use SN6501 or SN6505 to make an isolated power. The Vin=5V, Vout=12V, Io=100mA.

Do you have any reference design on this application? What's more, Do you have any recommendation on the transformer that needs to be used in this application?

Thank you for posting this question on E2E. Although TI does not have an identical reference design for this application, I will post a solution for you within the next few hours. In the meantime please consider these questions:

1. Does the customer's application have special conditions? Maybe for high temperature or automotive use
2. Is the customer's preference robustness over cost?

Please see the schematic below:

This schematic was derived from section 9 of the SN6505A datasheet, which is the best reference for this part. Keep in mind that the Schottky diodes shown are inexpensive, but will function optimally for temperatures below 85dC.

The transformer turn ratio was calculated to be 1:3.45, compensating for +/-10% power supply tolerance, losses across diodes + LDO, and additional margin. The center-tapped transformer used is Wurth Elektronik 750316769 and provides basic isolation. The customer may choose to use this transformer or contact their preferred vendor.

Is this okay for the customer specs? Please follow up with what is correct and what may be improved.

Hi Manuel,

Sorry for the late response. I have applied SN6505BEVM and SN6505BDBVR samples for customer. They are doing the evaluation now. Customer is also considering DCP010512BP as an easier solution. Thanks for your support.

You're welcome! The desired level of isolation our customer wants may be a determining factor. Keep in mind that the DCP010512BP provides isolation up to one 1-kV where the SN6501 or SN6505 are used with transformers which can provide basic or reinforced isolation (2.5kV - >5kV).
