Can I power the two sides of a digital isolator with different voltages?

  • Texas Instrument digital isolators can be supplied voltages within the recommended operating conditions on both sides of the device. Since the isolation barrier separates the two sides, each side can be sourced independently with any voltage within recommended operating conditions. For example, ISO77xx VCC1 can be supplied with 3.3V (which is within 2.25V to 5.5V) and at the same time VCC2 can be supplied with 5V (which is also within 2.25V to 5.5V). This way, the digital isolator can be used as a logic level translator in addition to providing isolation. The two sides of isolator are independent. Please read the ISO7721 datasheet for more information.
