[FAQ] Why use transformer drivers over other solutions?

Why use transformer drivers over other solutions?

  • Using a transformer driver provides freedom of choice by controlling the output voltage desired from very low voltages to as high as 24-V and beyond. This is done by scaling the transformer turns ratio to step up or down different voltage configurations. Transformer drivers also use a push-pull topology for low noise applications. This solution also allows operation at high power levels (up to 5W with the SN6505 device). For high efficiency, this discrete solution with a transformer driver is preferred. (For a compact integrated solution, Texas Instruments alternatively offers an isolated integrated power device.)
