ISO1212: Question of ESD Rating of ISO1212

Part Number: ISO1212
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE, ISO1211

Hi Sirs,

We have another ESD rating question needs to consult with product line. The ISO1212 device supports 2ch 24V Digital I/P Rx with 3kVrms VISO. We assume the ISO1212 can support ESD rating should be higher than 3kV, however ,we see +/-2kV HBM and +/-1kV CDM. Is there missing or mistake with the ESD rating specification? Would you please advise suggestion to support +/-8kV air ESD discharge?

Thank you and Best regards,

Wayne Chen

  • Hi Wayne,
Thanks for asking your question on E2E.
Please let me check with our standards expert on Monday and get back to you.
    Best regards,
    Dan
  • Wayne,

Regarding IEC ESD, please see table 3 above from the datasheet:

    1. Same-side:  For type 1 and type 3, with 10nF CIN capacitor, we can meet +/-6kV ESD contact, which is usually equivalent 8kV air.  If further improvement is needed, we can either increase CIN  (20nF or 40nF should work) or use an external TVS diode, as shown in Figure 22 from the datasheet.

    2. Across the barrier:  ISO1211 can meet 6kV contact, ISO1212 can meet 5kV contact. To meet 8kV air, we may need to use a Y capacitor from the floating ground to earth/PE (see figure 23). This capacitor is typically used in most Digital Input applications, and helps prevent IEC ESD strike from stressing the isolation barrier.

    Respectfully,

    Lucas

  • Hello Lucas,

    Thank you for your advise.
