ISO1212: Can fast switching diode used for bidirectional input?

Part Number: ISO1212

Hello experts,

The ISO1212 data sheet section 9.2.3 describes the use of Schottky barrier diodes for bidirectional input.

I want to use a high-speed switching diode instead of a Schottky barrier diode. Can I use a high-speed switching diode?

For example RT3DKAM.

Thanks and best regards,

-Udai

  • Hi Udai,

Thank you for posting to E2E! Schottky diodes are typically recommended for applications using ISO121x due to their low forward voltage drop, yielding higher efficiency.

Schottky diodes have low Vf specs (~0.3V) where normal  diodes, including RT3DKAM, have Vf specs ~0.7V.

There should not be a problem using a high speed switching diode instead of a Schottky diode here, but please do allow 1 - 2 days for our team to confirm.

    Respectfully,

  • Hi Manuel,

    Thank you for answering.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Udai,

Just like Manuel stated, the forward voltage of this high-speed diode will be greater and therefore dissipate more power. We recommend schottky diodes because of the lower forward voltage and therefore lower losses. High-speed diodes would functionally work as long as you account for the increased losses and voltage drop.

    Respectfully,

    Lucas
