ISO1432: Please confirm if I need to use an Isolation transformer for power supply on the bus side.

Part Number: ISO1432
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISOW1412

Hi,

I need a fully isolated RS485 transceiver, this means power supply on the bus side must be isolated. No need to use any kind of isolation transformer for bus side supply.

I saw that ISO14xx series devices have these feature. But in the typical application it is shown that an isolation transformer will be required for VCC2.

Can you please confirm if I will need isolation transformer for VCC2 ?

Currently I am using ADM2582E from Analog Devices which is fully isolated as per my requirement. I would like to replace it with ISO14xx series from TI.

Please provide your thought on same.

  • ,

Yes the ISO1432 would need external isolated DC/DC for the bus side that could be achieved by an isolation transformer.

The ISOW14xx family has the integrated isolated DC/DC conversion like the ADM2582E and might be what you are looking for.

The ISOW1412 is currently being sampled and you can apply for a sample through the product page for that device.

  • Hi Lucas,

This means that all the chips from ISO14xx family will need an external isolation transformer, please confirm.

The ISOW14xx has max data rate of 500kbps while we need at least 1mbps.

Is there any other chip similar to ADM2582E which TI offers, please let me know.

  • IP,

Yes all ISO14xx family will need an external means of achieving isolated DC/DC of which an isolated transformer is an option. Only the isolator families with the ISOW designation have integrated isolated DC/DC capabilities.

The ISOW14xx family is in development however I am unable to discuss the release schedule of these devices. A higher speed version of the ISOW1412 will be available in the near future.
