Long term availability of SM320DM6446-HIREL?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SM320DM6446-HIREL

Hi,

This question is in the same vein of another recent post regarding a catalog version of a similar processor, but we currently have a design that utilizes the SM320DM6446-HIREL for a military avionics display.  We are soon expecting an order for a similar display that will require support to 2025 and beyond.  Is there a DaVinci processor roadmap available that shows what the anticipated life cycle for the DM6446-HIREL is and if there is any intent to have pin compatible replacements/upgrades in the future?  I am concerned because the catalog version of the DM6446 has gone NRND which makes me wonder how much longer the HIREL version will be available.  If we start the design of the new display using this same processor, how long will we be able to build these before we start running into last time buy situations?  We really don't want to get into a situation where we design and qualify the new display and two years after we complete qualification testing find out we have to do it all over again.

Thanks,

Shawn

  • Hi Wade,

I appreciate you looking into this for me. Has there been any progress made on determining the expected life cycle of the DM6446-HIREL? We are kicking off our program and need to be certain that we still have a viable solution.

    Regards,

    Shawn
  • Shawn,
    Thanks for checking back.
This triggered several actions from multiple people. I am checking with all parties to see if I can consolidate answers.
Several of these people are out for long weekend. Will shoot for getting reply back early next week.
    Regards,

  • Shawn,
I was able to get everyone's input.
After review, there were no circumstances identified that would prevent manufacture of this device for foreseeable future.
We do have a letter that can be drafted indicating our policy on this.
If you would like this I can request it be generated.

Only potential issue, is that application support and updated collateral may not be available (or minimal) in the future. This could include tool chain, compilers and libraries for newer operating systems. Based on your description, I don't expect this to be an issue.

    Regards,
    Wade
  • Hi Wade,

Thank you so much for running this to ground for me. That is good news about future availability of the DM6446. We like this little workhorse and look forward to using it once again.

If it's not too much trouble, yes I would like a letter so we can show our customer we've done our due diligence to avoid designing in obsolescence. You can send the letter either through PM on the forum or to my email: shawn@fescorp.com

As you've indicated, long term development support is not as much of a concern as would be long term production support. Especially since once we have a working design, we typically "freeze" everything and store the development system 'as-is' so we can come back to it later if needed and know we have a complete and working development environment.

Thanks again for your help with this.
