MSP430FR5989-EP: Very-Low-Power Low-Frequency Oscillator

Hi team,

My customer would like to use the MSP430FR5989-EP for an very low power consumption application where -55degC temperature is required.

They would like to know if they can run it in active mode on the Very-Low-Power Low-Frequency Oscillator?

Moreover, do you have some characterization at very low clock frequency?

For example, you can find this data for the MSP430F249-EP:

fMCLK = fSMCLK = fACLK = 32,768Hz/8 = 4,096Hz --> I(am)=few uA

Pol,
I don't believe there will be any issue running this way. MCLK can be sourced from VLO.
Unfortunately we do not have characterization data for VLO active mode operation. There may be significant variability based on usage of peripherals and FRAM.

There is typical value of 103uA/Mhz or 65uA/Mhz (w/FRAM off).

I did find reference where someone was trying this on the 5969.
Current appeared to be somewhat higher than linear scaling would have predicted. Possibly related to FRAM accesses?

Pol,
I checked with the commercial team to confirm my assumption that this is okay.
They agree, but wanted to follow up on what they were intending to source from the VLO.
Also, as I am sure they are aware, the VLO is not very accurate and will vary with temperature.
