TPS40200-HT: Soft Start Pin steady state at 15V instead of 8V, controller does not operate.

Hello,

I've inherited a design using this device. There have been a number of failures with this IC, and the failure mode seems to be the loss of the internal 8V regulator. For example, when the 30V we use is applied, the soft-start pin will climb to 15V, instead of stopping at 8V, as a known good IC seems to have. If I reduce the input voltage, at some point the internal regulator seems to start working or at least the soft-start pin is now biased at 8V and the IC begins to work.

Has this failure been observed and what could possibly be causing the issue?

Hello Stephen,

Sorry to hear about the issues you are having. Are you able to upload your schematic so I can take a look at it? Perhaps that will provide some insight to the problem. I will also reach out internally to see if this failure has been seen elsewhere (I personally haven't heard of it before).
