Questions on BQ500511/BQ50002 Qi Charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ500511, BQ50002

Hello,

I’ve implemented the tidrih5 (5W Wireless Transmitter) schematic and built the first prototype. Right now, when I place my Samsung Galaxy S6 over the transmitter, I get a slow blinking green LED for a few seconds meaning “Power Transfer”, then I get a fast blinking red LED meaning “FOD Warning”. This flashes for several seconds then all LEDs go off. This cycle repeats over and over.

Question #1. Since my Samsung Galaxy S6 is Qi compliant it should work with the BQ500511/BQ50002 combo. Right? (It works fine with off -the-shelf Qi chargers).

To try and get past the FOD Warning, I removed R15 (on the tidrh5 schematic), making FOD_THR = 3v and thereby disabled. No change.

Question #2. How is it that I can get a flashing “FOD Warning” with the FOD disabled?

I also removed R26, the ILIM pull down because I saw on the BQ500511 data sheet that this pin (pin 4) is labeled “Reserved” and says to leave this pin open. This made no change. Still stuck in same cycle with FOD warning. I then pulled this pin up to 3v because I saw in the tidrjv8.pdf schematic that it was pulled up. No change.

Question #3. What should I do with pin 4 on the BQ500511?

I can see activity on all signals between the two ICs except MODE. MODE is always low.

Question #4.  Should MODE always be low?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Are you testing on the EVM?

If not, please check the firmware version in bq500511 sample and make sure it is 2745 (production firmware). Samples with pre-release firmware are marked as H58K ASZ3, the recommendation is to order replacement devices. We have fixed our sample stock with production firmware devices at TI e-Store.

  • I checked bq500511 and we do have the pre-release firmware, marked as H58K ASZ3, on the prototype. That's it.

    Thanks for letting me know.

  • I'm making some progress. I replaced the bq500511 with a part labeled H45K CHVP G4. Now when I put my phone over the transmitting coil I get a message on the phone "Charging Wirelessly..." and the green LED blinks slowly. After about 30 seconds the green LED turns off and I get a "Wireless charging paused" on the phone. This cycle repeats over and over. The phone charges fine with off-the-shelf chargers. The USB current, when charging, is around 780mA. (same as off-the-shelf chargers). I've tried several USB power sources (including stand alone D-Link 4 port hub) and no difference between any of them.

Question #1. Any idea why this is happening?

I also occasionally get a fast flashing red FOD LED. I have the FOD detection disabled (by removing R15 on the tidrh5 schematic).

Question #2. How is it that I can get a flashing “FOD Warning” with the FOD disabled?

Removing the phone case makes no difference. Also tried with different phone, no difference. Thanks in advance for your help!
