SN74LVC16244A: Total Part current spec clarification

Part Number: SN74LVC16244A

We are using P/N: SN74LVC16244ADGGR

We have not observed any issues but have an application/derating question.

In the datasheet, Section 10.2.2  Detailed Design Procedure, it states 25mA per output and 50mA total for the part.

We are well within 25mA per output, at ~ 10mA per output, some outputs at 50% duty cycle, and some at 100% duty.

We are concerned with total ‘part’  current being limited to 50mA.

We have:

1Y1-1Y4  ~10mA, at 50% duty cycle

2Y1-2Y4  ~10mA, at 50% duty cycle

3Y1-3Y4  ~10mA load on each

4Y1-4Y4  ~10mA load on each

This would be a mean total ‘part’ current of  ~120mA.

We are wondering if the 50mA total for the ‘part’ may be for a single set of 4x outputs (4 bits) ?

Can you confirm/clarify?

  • The actual numbers in the absolute maximum ratings table are 50 mA and 100 mA (they were probably copied from some smaller part). That entry also says "continuous current through each VCC or GND", so it looks as if you are OK.
