SN74LVC8T245: SN74LVC8T245DBR in RGMII Application

Part Number: SN74LVC8T245
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74AXC8T245, , SN74AVC8T245

Hello. I'm translating between a 1.8v MAC device and 2.5v Ethernet PHY and read SCEA065B in which SN74AXC8T245 was used for that application. As of the moment it looks like SN74AXC8T245 won't be available for a while and I was wondering if SN74LVC8T245 would be likewise suitable?

The switching propagation delays on the SN74AXC8T245 seem more impressive than the SN74LVC8T245, but SCEA065B hints that it's the channel-to-channel skew that matters.

Also, would TI have information on the RGMII protocol generally? It seems easy to find examples tied to specific hardware, but not the high level protocol itself.

Thanks!

  • Hi Lucas,

I don't think that device would work in this application. I would try SN74AVC8T245 if the SN74AXC8T245 isn't available. Ultimately, we don't guarantee our these parts to work in RGMII. They are generic translators that have parameters suitable for RGMII (e.g. channel count and data rate). It would be up to you to fully understand what parameters are needed for this interface and to make sure the translator provides those parameters.
