SN74LVC1G97-Q1: Output current rating

Part Number: SN74LVC1G97-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LVC1G97

The max current for the SN74LVC1G97 is +/- 24mA when powered with a 5V supply. In my team's application, we are using this logic gate to charge/discharge a small capacitor (in one part of the design this is 1nF) which will exceed this current rating for a short amount of time. We cannot add a current limiting resistor since it would add too much delay to the signal.

Is there any guidance on the pulse current rating for this part?

  • Hello,

We only rate this device to operate with a directly connected 50pF load.

I usually recommend to avoid driving a load any larger than 150% of the rated load. In this case, you're looking at doing 20x the rated loading.

If you really need to drive that size of capacitor, then I'd recommend using an actual gate driver or a discrete power FET rather than a logic gate - these devices aren't designed for heavy loads.

It's likely that the device will survive this type of excessive current, but I don't have data to make any type of risk assessment on how long it would work -- we just don't take that kind of data for this device.

  • Thank you for your response, Emrys! We will consider using a gate driver for this application.
