SN74HC74: TI part lookup page is useless

Part Number: SN74HC74

I've tried to find information on proper use of the TI part lookup and the result was 2,231 possible articles.  I don't have time to wade through all that in hopes somewhere someone may have actually answered with something that could help me with our problem.

We have a serious problem with a design that has been in production for years.  A simple SOIC 74HC74 is causing large amounts of rejected boards at the customer's site.  We've tracked the problem to what appears to be (hopefully) one or two batches of of chips.  I'm trying to find information regarding the dates for the possible bad batches but the TI part lookup simply will not work.  I've tried multiple variations/sub sections of the part data/etc trying to get some information on these parts.

The chips from the possibly bad batches are tagged as 25ZC10JG3 and 25Z9K8JG3.  I can't get the lookup tool to bring up any information on these batches/chips/whatever.

We took a board that was failing and replaced the "bad" chips (there are 5 per board) with chips labeled 21ANS5MG4 and the board started working properly.  Can someone tell me how the codes work so I can figure out how to wade through hundreds of boards to try to locate possible bad boards?  I notice on the two series that fail they have the same first 3 characters and last 3 characters.  Anyone know if that is relevant?

I'd really appreciate any assistance someone can provide as I have a LOT of boards to go through and need a way to try to segregate good from bad as quickly as possible.  Naturally, the two series above will automatically be considered "bad" but if the first 3 and/or last 3 digits can also be used to segregate the boards that will save a lot of time.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

  • Hi Joe,

The part lookup tool is not intended for what you are trying to do. The datecodes are NDA information to prevent counterfeit devices. We should be able to find what devices are part of the same lot internally. Do you have some more codes that you want me to look up?

  • Never mind.  We finally found the issue. The TI 74HC74 is NOT compatible with board from our customer.  We took a series of boards that were failing and replaced the TI component with components from a competitor and all the bad boards are now functional.  I'm not sure what is different considering a 74HC74 should be dirt simple but all I know is that we can now properly support out customer.
