SN74HC14: Datasheet revision markings

Hi team,

I have a customer with the below question and concern. Let me know what you think and thanks in advance!!

"I need some help with a TI part that doesn’t seem to be functioning like it used to.   

It is your part number SN74HC14PW.    We have some PCBA’s we recently received in that don’t seem to be working properly as they have in the past.  On your data sheet, I noticed that you had part marking changes and it said

Changes from Revision J (October 2016) to Revision K (June 2021) Page • Updated the numbering format for tables, figures and cross-references throughout the document.....

The parts we received on our PCBA’s before show a marking of HC14 17KG4 C2D3.    The current marking on the part is HC14 2CAG3 P27S.  Was something else changed on this part that we aren’t aware of?

I realize that SN74HC14PW is not going to be made anymore, but there is still stock out in the distribution arena that is being sold."

  • Hi Marco,

    What is the exact issue the customer is seeing? The part marking being different is not surprising as it will change through each batch and over years as well. 

  • As a clarification, the part marking of "HC14" should not change (this shows what device it actually is) but everything after is a designated date code which we have a system for each lot for traceability. 

  • Reply from the customer:

    "The part seems to not be testing properly.  The HC14-G4 we used prior does work and they HC14-G3 doesn’t seem to be working properly

    I have asked the question to the person that brought it up and they have left for the day so I will most likely have to respond in the morning with more detail."

  • During the move to 300 mm wafers, the HC family dies were redesigned. (The biggest change is that the inputs now have some hysteresis, but this does not matter for the '14, which already did have Schmitt-trigger inputs.)

    These changes do not affect any of the guaranteed datasheet specifications, but it appears that those PCBs violate the recommended operating conditions in some way.
