The datasheet says in section 9.3.1.1:

If an external pull-up is required, it should be no larger than 1 MΩ to avoid contention with the 5 MΩ internal pull-down.

As Clemens mentioned, you can use a pull-up as long as it's not larger than 1MΩ.
