TPS54260-Q1: Vin short to PH case

Part Number: TPS54260-Q1

Hi Expert,

My customer find TPS54260-Q1 damage and Vin short to PH. The Vin is 24V and Vout is 5V. The 36V TVS close to Vin pin is good. So the Vin must be lower than 36V, which is lower than abs 65V. The output 5V's Ferrite bead damage. The next load CAN IC's 5V power supply pin also damage.

  1. Could you help confirn the withstand voltage for MOSFET between Vin and PH?
  2. Any suggestion to find the probable root cause?
  3. It seems overcurrent, but why TPS54260-Q1 overload protection not work?

  • Hello Beida

1.Abs Max Rating is in the datasheet

    2. Please check V(PH-SW) switching spike might be excessive. Please find the condition when the device is damaged.  Please check V(BOOT-PH) the internal MOSET might be damaged when BOOT pin is damaged.

    3. Please let me know the full load current.

  • Hi EricLee,

    1. Form my understanding, the abs table voltage is regardless to GND. The damage part is MOSFET between Vin and PH. So customer wants to know how many tolerances voltage for this MOSFET(Drain to Source)?

    2. Because device already damage. We can't get V(PH-SW) switching spike. The device damage in vehicle. Measuring impedance between BOOT pin to PH pin, it is HiZ status.

    3. The output load current is exceed 200mA. Because output path ferrite beads damage and its rated current is 200mA.

    4. Pls see below figure: Red is damage, Green is good.

  • Hello Beida

    1. V(PH-GND) is the same as V(Drain-source)

Are you able to duplicate the issue ? If the device is already damaged and you cannot duplicate the issue, it is hard to do more investigation.

    What's the failure rate ?
