SN74LV8153 drive capability

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LV8153

I'm wondering if I can use the SN74LV8153 to drive a 12V relay.  Coil imp is 390 ohms, so IOL required is 31mA.  DS says it can handle 40mA but suggests this is only with VCC2 at 4.5V.  VCC2 will need to be at 12V.  DS not explicitly clear on 12V drive capability.

Thanks,

Mike

  • Hello Mike,

How many channels of the device are you looking to use for driving relays?

Since you are sinking the current I would think that same current limit would apply between the 4.5V & 12V case for the open collector case.

However if there is concern you could always use the SN74LV8153 as a serial to parallel FET gate driver to control the relays.

  • Hey Ryan,

Was hoping to use all 8 ch and avoid the FETs.  If the outputs can sink 40mA it should work. but the DS suggests that that current level is limited to 4.5V range.  Obviously in open collector the output will be well below the 4.5V when exciting the relay.

    Thanks,

    Mike (former TI)
