Level shifter recommendation for SD 3.0

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TWL1200-Q1, SN74AVCA406, TXS02612, TWL1200

Does TI make any SD 3.0 Level translators that are not in a 0.5 mm BGA package?

I found below in the parametric search:

TWL1200-Q1: Automotive Catalog SDIO, UART, and Audio Voltage-Translation Transceiver
Product Folder: http://www.ti.com/product/TWL1200-Q1
Data sheet (PDF): http://www.ti.com/litv/pdf/sces832a

Could you also confirm that the above device has the SD 3.0 feature?

Sonia

  • Hello Sonia,

The SN74AVCA406 is available in a TSSOP package and the TXS02612 is available in a QFN package.

As far as I know, SD 3.0 specifies an increased storage capacity of up to 2TB versus 32GB for SD 2.0. This should have no effect on the operation of the translator, so these translators should be able to support SD 3.0.
  • Could you please verify if the below device supports SD 3.0:

TWL1200-Q1: Automotive Catalog SDIO, UART, and Audio Voltage-Translation Transceiver
    Product Folder: www.ti.com/.../TWL1200-Q1
    Data sheet (PDF): www.ti.com/.../sces832a
  • Hello Stokes,

Besides the difference in maximum capacity there are also different speed ratings defined in the SD specification. These ratings can be found at the following link: and in the table below.

We can see that SD 3.0 can support data rates of 50MBps and 104MBps. For SDR50 and SDR104, the required clock frequencies would be 100MHz and 208MHz respectively. For DDR50 the required clock frequency would be 50MHz. We can see from the TWL1200 data sheet that the maximum supported clock frequency is 50MHz. Because of this limitation on clock frequency the TWL1200 can not support modes that require >50MHz clock (SDR50 and SDR104). It should be able to support DDR50.

  • From your first post, are you confident that SN74AVCA406 and TXS02612 support SD 3.0? If not could you please verify
  • Hello,

Upon further research, I cannot guarantee that any of our translators can support SD 3.0. While they may be able to support DDR50, because they cannot support the high clock rates of SDR50 and SDR104, we cannot qualify these parts as SD 3.0 compliant.
