SN74221: SN74221: Resolution of the pulse generated

Part Number: SN74221

Hi forum,

Does anyone know what is the width resolution of the pulse generated by SN74221?

I am working on designing a monostable multivibrator which generates the pulses of < 500 ps in the precision of pulse-width. (The range of pulse width is < ~ 100ms.)

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Koo Hyun Nam,

The SN74221 is an analog device, so resolution isn't a spec for it. All monostable multivibrators rely on external resistors and capacitors to maintain consistent timing (they use the RC charge time to produce consistent pulse widths). Unfortunately, the best capacitors have tolerances greater than 5%, which means the output pulse will have similar error. No monostable multivibrator will be able to keep precision to < 500 ps with a 100 ms pulse width.
