CD4026B: 100kHz 3 digit Frequency Counter

Using three CD4026BE counters I am building a simple frequency counter with 100kHz full scale count.  What should I use for the gate time to allow the 100kHz full scale count?

  • Hi Andy,
The CD4026B only counts to 10 for each device (0-9, then outputs a carry bit for the next stage and resets), so using 3 for a 3-digit display would mean you only have 999 maximum "counts" available. From that we can determine the gating period.

If 999 (count) = 100 kHz, then we just need to know how long it takes to get 999 pulses from a 100 KHz signal, which would be 999 / 100000 = 9.99 ms

If you want to make it less confusing and show 1 kHz per digit (ie 100 (count) = 100 kHz) then I would go with 100/100000 = 1ms

Or if you want to end at 99.9 kHz instead to get maximum resolution while still maintaining a numerical match, you could go with 999/99900 = 10ms.
