SN74LVC1G374-Q1: the different meaning between Abs Max 50mA and IOH & IOL

Part Number: SN74LVC1G374-Q1

Hi Team

SN74LVC1G374-Q1 has Abs Max +- 50mA for output current on Q pin,

so that the part will not get damaged below +- 50mA output current.

BTW,,, there are IOH and IOL which are reduced according to VCC down.

may I ask what IOH and IOL mean ? and why they have different current value by VCC down ?

for example, IOH and IOL mean that at VCC = 1.65V, the output current should not exceed +- 4mA ?

i am confused about Abs Max +- 50mA and the spec of IOH & IOL.

  • Hi Paul,
Absolute Maximum Ratings are essentially break points for a device. If the output is driven beyond 50mA (ie 50.0000001 mA) then we cannot guarantee that the device will continue to operate.

Recommended Operating Conditions are the values that the device is characterized under and the range of values under which the device should be operated.

Just to be clear, the datasheet does not include a "short circuit current" specification, so the physical outputs can source/sink much more current than the maximum listed here. Doing that would almost certainly damage the device.
