CD40109B: Voltage level translation from 12V to 3.3V

Part Number: CD40109B

I am looking for an application circuit for CD40109B for Voltage level translation from 12V to 3.3V and vice-versa. Is it possible with this IC? Please let me know.

  • Hi Swetha,

Yes it is possible to do that level translation. However, the direction can't change dynamically as this is a unidirectional device.

  • Above is the schematic. Just wanted to make sure if it works like this:

    When A is high (3.3V), Aout =12V

and When A is low (0V), Aout =0V? Am I right?

Is there any IC like this with only 1 level shifter instead of 4?

Also if I want to use this IC for doing a 12 V to 3.3V translation for a different application-will interchanging Vcc and Vdd work?

    Please let me know. Thanks!

  • Hi Swetha,

You are correct with your implementation. There are single channel translators but this is the only device that can operate at the 12 V you desire. The supplies can be interchanged, you can use 12 V on VCC or VDD depending on whether you are doing up translation or down translation.
