A Schmitt-trigger buffer can do this, if you add a low-pass filter (R and C) at the input.

The smallest packages are used by single-gate devices.

Use the SN74LVC1G17 for 1.8 V to 5 V supplies, or the SN74AUP1G17 for lower voltages.

No. When the AC family was modern, there were no single-gate devices or non-inverting Schmitt-trigger buffers, so two inverters was the only way to implement this.
