SN74LVC2GU04: Peak clamping current

I have cases where a capacitive load might be driven from the other side. In that case a current is driven into the output and possibly the clamping diodes. The datasheet specifies 50mA as the absolute maximum rating. Is this an average/rms-value or a peak value? For many discrete diodes the ratio between peak/surge and continuous is around 3, but can even be 25 or so, indicating that the limit is essentially a thermal one. Given that the diodes not least protect against ESD IMHO there must be a higher peak current value. Is it legitimate and reasonable just to derive the limit from the dissipated energy of around 15mJ(/sec)?
