Digital mux 2:1

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LVC1G3157, TS5A3153, TS5A3159A

Hello, in my circuit I need to choose between two signals to send to the output. One signal is a train of pulses (5V amplitude) coming from a comparator (open-collector output with external resistor pulled-up) and the other comes from the output of a 555 oscilator (also 5V amplitude).

I think I can use a 2:1 mux or a digital SPDT switch/transmission gate to pass one signal or another to the output. Is the TS5A3153 or the SN74LVC1G3157 a good choice to do the job? or is it only to transmit analog signals?

The IC requirements are: 5V power supply, max. frequency pulses to transmit < 500 kHz, and if possible, small package! (<=soic8 in size).

Best regards!

  • Hi Mr. Electron,
The two switches you mentioned are both good and can do the job. They can transmit digital as well as analog signals, and at low frequencies such as <500 kHz, your signal integrity will be very good.
There are a lot more switches to choose from as well - they vary in on-resistance, package size, price, and more. You can find a list here: http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/switches-multiplexers/analog-switch-multiplexer-less-product.page

What is your end application / project?

  • Hi Ryan,

thank you for your response! The application I'm working is an audio synthesizer.

I think that is better if I use a break-before-make switch, right? to avoid the connection between the comparator and 555 outputs when the control signal switches. Do you recommend me the TS5A3159A or the SN74LVC1G3157 mentioned above?

The incoming pulse width is <10 us, so looking the specifications for both the BBM time seems very short compared to it, also the turn-off/on times.
