SN74ALS245A: Failure mode

Part Number: SN74ALS245A

Hello Expert,

Could you please confirm whether there is possiblity that device will receive damage or not in following condtions ?

Pre-define :

Always OE = "L" and DIR = "H"

Condition 1 :

Short b/w 17 pin(3 pin is "H" level) and 18 pin(2 pin is "L" level)

This means Short b/w output.

Condition 2 :

In case of open collector output, short b/w 5V(Pull up voltage) and 18 pin(2 pin is "L" level)

This means pull up resistor become short mode.

Best Regards,

  • Hello,
Shorting between outputs can cause damage to the device. This device can produce rather large currents (250+mA) from a single output when shorted, and we recommend keeping the current between -15 and +48 mA.

Condition 1 and Condition 2 are the same from my point of view -- shorting an output to the opposite value will always result in problems. This device does not have any internal protection for current limiting.
