SN74LVC1G240: 32kHz Pierce Oscillator application

Part Number: SN74LVC1G240
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LVC1G04, , SN74LVC1GX04, SN74LVC1GU04

Hello,

I have a user seeking support for a recommendation for a 32kHz Pierce Oscillator:

I am seeking some technical help regarding the use of your part SN74LVC1G240DCKR, a single gate inverter. Is it considered suitable for use in a 32kHz Pierce Oscillator design and if so, do you have a reference schematic?

We do have such a design but it refuses to operate unless I push the design parameters way away from theory, hence the question!

Many thanks.

Linda

  • Hi Linda,
While the SN74LVC1G240 can be used in oscillator circuits, it is a buffered inverter and won't be as stable as an unbuffered inverter. The SN74LVC1GX04 Crystal Oscillator Driver is much better suited for driving a crystal oscillator. The SN74LVC1GX04 basically contains an SN74LVC1GU04 Unbuffered Inverter and an SN74LVC1G04 Inverter in the same package. There's a detailed application report on this topic located here: www.ti.com/.../szza043.pdf
Figure 19 is an example Pierce Oscillator using the SN74LVC1GU04.
