SN74LVC1GU04: driving the Mosfet gate with SN74LVC1GU04

Part Number: SN74LVC1GU04

I am using  SN74LVC1GU04  IC  in above circuit.  the mosfet gate resistance is 10ohm.  at the time of turn on  mosfet gate will draw a peak current  = 5/10 = 0.5A  from the NOT gate output pin,  whether this will destroy the output pin? please tell me how output pin will behave in this condition .

Note :  average current drawn from the output pin  is very less.

  • Hello,
The 2N7002 acts as a 50 pF load to the SN74LVC1GU04. The device is clearly rated to drive a 50pF load - see the Parameter Measurement Information section of the datasheet for the timing load conditions. We recommend keeping the load at or below 70pF to prevent signal integrity issues or possible damage to the device.

This operation will not damage the SN74LVC1GU04 -- however you should know that the SN74LVC1GU04 will not generate 500mA of current. It is much more likely that you will see a peak current of ~150mA. Your equation does not account for the fact that 5V is not directly applied to the node at pin 6. It is applied at Vcc of the SN74LVC1GU04, and must send current through a P-channel MOSFET at the output of the device. The voltage across the 10 ohm resistor will never reach 5V, so 500mA will never flow in the circuit.
