SN74LVC2G17: SN74LVC2G17 temporarily unused

Part Number: SN74LVC2G17

Hi,

I want to use the SN74LVC2G17 to convert an analog output (max voltage of 5V) from an wheel encoder to a 3.3V digital signal that will be connected to a microcontroller. The encoder will be connected to this board via a JST connector. There are times that an input on the SN74LVC2G17 will be floating if the user hasn't plugged in the encoder's cable to the board. I know the datasheet warns about leaving the input floating. However, if this is done will it end up damaging the SN74LVC2G17? If the output goes crazy that is fine on the microcontroller end. I'm just worried about some kind of damage to the actual SN74LVC2G17.

  • Schmitt-trigger inputs can handle any voltage between GND and VCC, so there will be no permanent damage.

However, a floating input still increases the power consumption, so it would be a good idea to add a weak pull-down or pull-up resistor.
