SN74AC08: Over voltage tolerance clarification

Part Number: SN74AC08
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LV08A

Hello,

I read that one of the features of the SN74AC08 device is that it has over voltage tolerant inputs. Does this imply that i am able to apply a voltage higher than VCC continuously to the inputs of the gate without damaging the device?

For my specific case, i am hoping to supply the logic gate with 3.3V to keep the output voltage below 3.3V while interfacing with 5V sensors, where the output of the gates will then be fed to the input of an MCU. Hence the reason why i would need the gate to keep the voltage below 3.3v.

Thank you in advance.

Michael
